History

Local creation mythology of how the area came to be can be found in the fragments of ancient poetry, Y’ Tal Onte en’ Agar.
The Sanguine City can be most defined by the bloody and long wars fought in the past with Tiga Matahari. During the great drow invasion 2,500 years ago, the high elves and the sun elves, calling themselves the Army of the Golden Sun, came together to fight back against the invaders from the Underdark and retake the southeast coast.
Unfortunately, of the moon elves who inhabited the area occupied by the drow, a few of the more aristocratic families were swayed by the deceitful whispers of their new subjugators. Promising to be spared and treated equally by the drow, these betrayers joined forces with the drow and fought against the Army of the Golden Sun who came to free them. This caused the Army of the Golden Sun forces to take extra caution with those whom they perceived to be drow allies.
Not all of the drow who broke through to the surface wished to conquer, however. Small groups of drow rebels, seizing their opportunity to free themselves from the shackles of a Lolth-centric society, sought refuge on the surface. Some of the more sympathetic moon elves harbored drow rebels, knowing the risks they faced but unable to ignore those who were only suffering from the war the same as they were. Sadly, many of these moon elves were only seen as drow sympathizers and possible drow allies, and were unjustly slain or imprisoned during the war by the Army of the Golden Sun. Infuriated by the treatment of their own people, many moon elves either joined the drow forces or simply turned against both sides.
At the peak of the great war, after 80 years of bloody fighting, the casualties faced by all three sides were catastrophic. It was at this time that the drow began use of their ultimate strategy, a cruel and horrifying use of magic gifted to powerful priestesses of Lolth. The resulting death and destruction was so great for both the Army of the Golden Sun and the moon elf population, that an emergency treaty was made between the Army of the Golden Sun and the moon elves. Even the aristocracy who originally joined the drow found themselves subject to the murder and cruelty of their former allies from the Underdark, and soon they too sheepishly joined sides with the new Alliance of Shevarash.
The newly formed alliance fought the drow back together, and managed to push them back with their combined ferocity. During this time, some sects of the moon elves began resorting to what was considered dark, taboo, and ancient magic arts, such as blood magic in order to level the playing field with the powerful magics the drow were wielding. This caused the put-aside rift between the sun and moon elves to deepen, though it was tolerated at the time to avoid undoing any progress made in fighting the drow together.
In the next 50 years—a short amount of time for the elves—the drow were all but banished from the surface by the intense war. Though it should have been a time of celebration and remembrance, the elves were not all at peace. Many of the sun elves began pushing to imprison or execute the moon elves for their war crimes in using dark magics as well as for joining the drow, but it was argued that the treaty entailed that the moon elves would be pardoned for their actions during the war in exchange for their contributions to the new alliance, and that it was assumed that the pardon would extend to after the war as well. This was especially considered crucial and fair, as many of the moon elves were suffering greatly due to the fact that they lived primarily on the southeast coast which had been mostly destroyed during the war, and were looking to seek refuge in the relatively nearby sun elf city of Tiga Matahari on the southern coast.
The high elves were willing to extend the pardon as negotiated by the moon elves, though it is rumored that this was done purely out of lack of interest in the politics of the post war sun and moon elves and eagerness to return to their own isolated city, Olo Anoron, in the northeast. Meanwhile, a bitter rivalry ensued between the sun elves and the moon elves, and they began fighting each other in a localized short war of 100 years before the new forces of a nearby city called Cadarnle, which had a strong and well-structured organization of peacekeeping paladins, intervened and helped to work out a formal treaty.
